E-Learning support for staff

Faculty of Humanities staff have access to a comprehensive e-Learning support site within Blackboard . The site is called e-Learning Essentials and is accessed through the University’s Blackboard pages. If you cannot access the site from within Blackboard, please contact the Teaching and Learning team.

1. How do I log in to Blackboard?
You will need your Manchester University username and password.

Go the University Portal and login with your University username and password. You can access Blackboard from there.

2. What is my username (Blackboard id)?
This is your University username

3. What is my password?
This is your University password

4. How do I get my username/password?
You should use the University’s IT Signup process.

5. What about access for visiting members of staff?
It is possible to use a guest log in for visitors. If you need a guest ID, please contact the Teaching and Learning team.

6. My username and password are correct, why can’t I log in?
The most likely causes are:

If you are still unable to log in look at the Blackboard Student support website.

7. Why can’t I see my module(s)?
Blackboard gets information on which modules you are registered for from the student records system (Campus Solutions). Contact your School Undergraduate or Postgraduate Office. They can check your module registrations are in order.

8. Why can I see other module(s)?
Some modules are available to all staff in the Faculty.
It is possible that you have been registered for the wrong module. If you believe this to be the case please contact the Teaching and Learning team.

9. I can get into my module, but I can’t see everything that should be there.
Some modules use specific release criteria to control access to parts of the course.

10. How do I create a Blackboard module?
You can do this using the University Designer Support Pages. We also recommend that you consult the Humanities Teaching and Learning Blackboard site for information about Blackboard and e-Learning.

11 What training is available?
There is information on the Blackboard site about training courses and events. Training in the creation and use of Blackboard, web design and authoring and other skills are available from IT Services.

There are self guided training materials available on the University Designer Support Pages.

12. Why are last year’s students in this year’s module?
It is essential to reset your module at the end of the year. This can be done through the Designer Support Pages. However, we recommend that you consult the information on the Humanities Teaching and Learning Blackboard site before resetting.

13. Can I archive my module?
Yes. This can be done through the Designer Support Pages. However, we recommend that you consult the information on the Humanities Teaching and Learning blackboard site before archiving.

1. What is Blackboard?

Blackboard is a web-based system that complements and builds upon traditional learning methods used at The University of Manchester. By using the Blackboard system you can view course materials and learning resources, including multimedia, for any units that you are taking that have a Blackboard module. The software also provides tools for communicating and collaborating with your lecturer or other students about the course using discussions, chat or email.

2. How do I log in to Blackboard?

You will need your Manchester University username and password.

Go the University Portal and login with your University username and password. To enter Blackboard, click the “My Studies” tab at the top of
the page and click on the link reading ‘My Blackboard home’.

 

3. What is my username (Blackboard id)?

This is your University username.

4. What is my password?

This is your University password.

5. How do I get my username/password?

You should use the University’s IT Signup process.

6. My username and password are correct, why can't I log in?

The most likely causes are:

Please try again, taking particular care with your typing. If you are still unable to log in, please contact the Service Desk.

7. Why can't I see my module(s)?

Access to your modules is through the student registration system, known as Campus Solutions. You can check which modules you are registered for by using Student Systems Self Service Centre. If these are incorrect, you may be able to change your details for some of the courses. You will need to wait up to 24 hours between enrolling on a course through the self-service centre and being able to log in to the Blackboard module. If you are still experiencing problems submit a support request to the email address elearning@manchester.ac.uk.

If you experience problems enrolling on a course, you should contact your School Undergraduate or Postgraduate Office.

Note: not every course uses Blackboard

8. Why can I see other module(s)?

Access to your modules is through the student registration system, known as Campus Solutions. You can check which modules you are registered for by using Student Systems Self Service Centre. If these are incorrect, you may be able to change your details for some of the courses. If this is not possible, you should contact your School Undergraduate or Postgraduate Office.

9. I can get into my module, but I can't see everything that should be there/things don't work

Some modules use time controls access to parts of the course.

10. I can get into my module, but I can't see my discussion group(s).

You should contact your course tutor who will add you to the correct discussion group(s).

11. Why can't I access my group on the Discussion Board?

You should contact your course tutor who will add you to the correct discussion group(s).

12. I can see my discussion group(s), but can't post.

Some discussion groups have a limited time “window” for posting. Usually, you will be able to see the group after the “window” has closed, but you will not be allowed to post. If you think that you should be able to post, you should contact your course tutor.

13. I'm a second/third year, why am I seeing last year's module(s)?

It is possible that the module(s) have not been reset. You should contact the course tutor(s)  to ask them if they will reset the module(s).

14. I'm a second/third year repeat student why am I seeing next year's module(s)?

If these are incorrect, you may be able to change your details for some of the courses. If this is not possible, you should contact your School Administrator.

15. Why can't I log in to Blackboard at home?

It is possible that you have additional security set on your home computer. There is a “Check Browser” link on the Blackboard entry page which should help you access it. If you are still unable to access Blackboard, please contact the Service Desk.

16. Is there any training in Blackboard available?
